Colour is generally divided into a WARM or COOL category. It is interesting and fun to work out each student’s colour category and then place them into one of four seasons. From what we learn here, you will be taking yarn provided by Jamieson’s of Shetland and knitting up your own unique scarf which will incorporate your colours.

Donˋt be depressed if you lost a knitted stitch, lost a mistake or used the wrong yarn. Turn it into a creative process and let yourself be inspired by a small piece of felted wool. You can create your individual one-of-a-kind-piece (cushion, neck-warmer, pullover…) by combining different techniques, materials and yarns. All wool addicts welcome!

Wrist Warmers: 5 Needles – BOOK
Dates: 3 October 10am – 1pm | Cost: £60
Knitting with five needles is a very simple skill and enables beginners to knit every size in rounds. The class will begin using one colour of yarn but more experienced knitters can use more than one colour. In this half day class we start with wrist warmers; at home you can expand to leg warmers, pullovers for teddy bears or round-scarves. It is very easy to create colourful patterns opening a big space of individual inspiration.

An exhibition of the Guild’s work will be on display and refreshments will be provided.
2024 programme
The 2024 programme is available to download from our website – if you haven’t seen it go and take a look. It will give you a good overview of the event – in addition to classes, talks and tours there are plenty of other woolly related activities going on throughout the week including exhibitions, open studios, knitting demonstrations, the makers market and of course the SWW Hub where you can chat and connect with fellow Wool Weekers.

If you’re in Shetland you can pick up a copy from the Shetland Museum or various wool shops.

Agricultural Shows
A highlight in Shetland’s crofting calendar are the agricultural shows that take place during August and September. A lot of work and preparations go into readying livestock for the event in the hope of winning a trophy.

Of course we enjoy the displays of cattle, sheep, ponies, baking, flowers and vegetable art but what we love most, and our first stop at any show, is the knitwear exhibits. Every year we are blown away by the talent of our islands’ knitting community – from intricate lace shawls to beautiful colour blending, exceptional Fair Isle garments to impressive children’s projects – there is always an outstanding display every year – and well worth a visit if you are in Shetland at show time.

Still to go this year are the Unst Show on Saturday 31st August and the Yell Show on Saturday 7th September 2024.
